Are y’all ready for the season finale of Dark Matter? Here’s hoping our crew of skallywags uncovers some answers to the mysteries that have been plaguing us! We’ve got some old faces, new looks, and, of course, lots of explosions in Dark Matter: But First, We Save the Galaxy.
Episode 13 opens with Delaney Truffault (Torri Higginson) consulting with a woman about an upcoming diplomatic summit between the corporations on Eos-7. It will be the first face-to-face meeting of the council of corporations in over 10 years. Suddenly, the two are told that an unidentified ship has breached their perimeter. Truffault looks out a window and sees that the ship is none other than her on-again-off-again allies, the Raza.
Two (Melissa O’Neil) and Three (Anthony Lemke) join Truffault in a conference room and ask her about Eos-7. They tell her that they believe that Eos-7 will come under attack, likely by a bomb that will destroy the entire station. This will spark an all-out corporate war.
On the Raza, Nyx (Melanie Liburd) receives a call from Ryo (Alex Mallari, Jr.). Ryo tells Nyx that his step-mother and brother had to die to prevent a civil war. Nyx tells him that she’ll never forgive him for his part in Milo’s death. Ryo says that Nyx is strong, and that he needs her strength by his side. He thinks that she’ll never fully fit in with the rest of the crew, and asks her to be his Empress. We then see Misaki (Ellen Wong) listening in to their conversation. Uh oh.
“We could be off getting fat and rich right now, robbing this galaxy blind.” | Back in Truffault’s office, Two and Three have told Truffault that their information about the potential threat to Eos-7 came from their trip to the parallel universe and the seer ship. Needless to say, Truffault is skeptical. Two and Three manage to convince her that the GA aren’t capable of protecting Eos-7, and Truffault confirms that tensions between the corporations are high. She finally agrees to let the Raza help.
On the Raza, Truffault tells the crew that Eos-7 was chosen for it’s high security and remoteness. It’s surrounded by a field that prevents FTL travel through it. Once the conference starts, no one will be allowed in or out. But the blink drive will allow the Raza to pop in undetected. In order to search for the bomb, the crew of the Raza will need access to the station’s systems. They’ll have to get someone inside to tap into the system directly. Five (Jodelle Ferland) volunteers, and Truffault will forge credentials for her.
On Eos-7, members of the GA are undergoing a briefing. We find that their commanding officer is Chief Inspector Kierken (Kris Holden-Ried), who has been on the Raza’s trail for a long time.
“I suppose I just never realized that emotions could have such a downside.” | Two weeks later, the summit is about to begin. While Five is donning her disguise on the Raza, Android expresses worry for her. She wishes she could be the one to put herself in danger, instead of Five, and feels guilty. Five assures Android that there will be plenty of other chances to risk her life, and walks into the hall in her new garb. She’s wearing a blonde wig and business attire, to masquerade as Truffault’s assistant.
Truffault and Five meet Commander Nieman (David Richmond-Peck) of Ferous Corp. and his assistant, Arrian(Kyle Mac). Nieman insists on speaking in private to Truffault, and Arrian asks Five to get a drink with him. Five declines, saying that she has somewhere to be. She then sneaks into a restricted room and plugs a port into the station’s system, giving the Raza full access to sensors and cameras.
Two and Android are looking for any signs of terrium aboard the station, as they had found evidence in the parallel universe that Eos-7 was blown up using a terrium bomb.
“What are they gonna do, slit everyone’s throats?” | Five returns to where Arrian is, and he tells her that they’re waiting on the new delegation from the League of Autonomous Worlds. The delegation is from Zairon, and was added at the last minute. Five looks at the delegation, noting that they are carrying daggers. Arrian tells her that they’re ceremonial, so they were allowed to keep them. Five leaves again, trying to stay unnoticed by Ryo, who is part of the delegation. But he spots her nonetheless.
In the monitoring room on Eos-7, Kierken has noticed Ryo’s presence, as have the crew of the Raza. Six (Roger Cross) thinks that they should pull Five out, but Two tells him that if Five is in trouble, she’ll use her coms.
Five is now in a storage room, com in hand, about to contact the Raza. Suddenly, two of Ryo’s royal guard enter the room. One of them notices her com, and thinks she’s a spy. They seize her, but then Arrian shows up in the doorway. The guards tell him to leave, drawing their ceremonial daggers, but instead, he attacks them, knocking them out, but getting a cut on his face along the way. Five insists on seeing the wound, and when he shows her, she sees the flesh regenerating. He’s an Android, running an illegal program like our Android has!
Android notices while watching security footage that one camera is on a loop. It’s the camera covering Ferrous Corp.’s shuttle. It’s how they’ll get off the station undetected, and Two decides, it’s how the Raza crew will get in.
Back in the supply room, Five and Arrian tie up Ryo’s men. Arrian is surprised when Five tells him she won’t turn him in.
Two, Three, and Five dress up to go into the station. Nyx will be monitoring things from the bridge. Three complains about looking ridiculous, and Two promises him that after this, they’ll let him pick a heist to pull. “But first, we save the galaxy,” she finishes.
Android has given Two, Three, and Five devices to scan for terrium radiation, so they split up to cover more ground.
In the council chambers, the members vote on whether to add 3 new members to the council. Nieman of Ferrous Corp. opposes the resolution, but it passes. Nieman requests a recess and shares a long look with Arrian leaving Arrian upset.
Six is walking down a hallway, scanning for terrium, when he is boxed in by GA guards, and Kierken nabs him.
Ryo returns to his quarters to find Two waiting for him. She tells him of their concerns, and he tells her that in the parallel universe, when the corporate war broke out, the corporations backing Zairon’s enemies had to pull their support. Ryo asks again for the blink drive, and Two refuses again.
“That wasn’t a scream! It was a manly cry of pain.” | Five opens the door to a room, and someone grabs her from behind, covers her mouth, and spins them both into the room. Five fights off his hands with a few well-placed blows, and turns to find Three groaning in pain. After he recovers, he gives her a terrium detector. Three tells her that it’s Ferrous who is blowing Eos-7 up, and Five says that they just lost a big vote and called for a recess. They realize that the Ferrous delegation likely already left, and that the bomb could go off at any time.
Five tells Three to go prep the Marauder for launch; she thinks she knows where the bomb is. But Three is waylaid by two men with a wrench and a crowbar. After they beat him up, Nieman shows up, asking what he’s doing there. Three tells him that they’re going to stop his plan, but Nieman doesn’t think they will be able to.
Kierken throws Six in a cell, and Six tries to convince him of the danger. Unsurprisingly, Kierken doesn’t buy a word of it, instead asking what Ryo has planned. Six tells him that Ryo can’t be planning anything, because he doesn’t have a way off the station, whereas Ferrous Corp. does.
A member of Ryo’s Imperial Guard gets into a guard station, killing the guard with his ceremonial dagger. An unauthorized shuttle launch pops up on the screen, and the Imperial Guard authorizes the launch. So much for Ryo not having anything planned! Another Imperial Guard stands enters a restricted access room, and Two, following him, tries to get in. A GA guard catches her, though, and tells her that it’s a restricted area.
In the Raza, Android suddenly comes face-to-face with Ryo. He used the Marauder’s verification code to gain access, and he’s after the blink drive. He uses a command sequence to shut Android down and sends Misaki to monitor at the bridge. He tells her to use non-lethal force only against anyone she encounters.
“Once you start to care, it’s not so easy to turn your back when something terrible is about to happen.” | In the council chambers, Five notices that the delegations from the League of Autonomous Worlds (represented by Ryo) and Ferrous Corp. are gone, but Arrian is still there. Five follows Arrianto a deserted corridor, and as she approaches, her terrium detector starts beeping. She realizes her hunch was right, and that Arrian is the bomb. Five tries to figure out a way to prevent the bomb from going off. Arrian can’t shut it down, and only Nieman has the code. Shutting himself down won’t do any good either. He urges her to get off the station, but Five won’t give up. She begs him to try to think of something, because even if she manages to get off the station, he’d still be killing hundreds of people and starting a war. Arrian has an idea. Before Five can say anything, Arrian seals himself in an airlock, and spaces himself. He doesn’t get far from the ship before the bomb detonates.
On the Raza, Nyx is looking for Android. She doesn’t get a response when she calls her, so she heads to the bridge, where she finds Misaki. Misaki lunges at Nyx with a knife (those darn ceremonial blades!) and Nyx draws a knife from her boot. Misaki is a skilled fighter, but even she can’t beat someone who can see the future! Nyx tells her as much, but Misaki replies that she doesn’t need to beat her. She just needed to cut her with her knife, which she had. Well, that’s just rude. Poisoning your crush’s ex-girlfriend/potential future wife—well, I guess I can see where she’s coming from. She leaves Nyx on the floor, and meets Ryo back at their shuttle, telling him that she encountered no resistance.
Once on their shuttle, Ryo reactivates Android. He tells her that he’s taken the blink drive, but that’s not important at the moment. He says she needs to get the crew back to the Raza, as Eos-7 will be destroyed in 20 minutes. There’s no way to stop it. Android immediately calls Two, Three, Five, and Six, and explains that even though Five took care of Ferrous Corp.’s bomb, Ryo has another plan in motion. Two seems to be the only one reading Android, but then Kierken’s voice sounds in their ears. He’s taken Five’s coms. Unfortunately, he thinks that the conversation Android just had with Two was false, and is determined that none of the crew of the Raza will leave Eos-7. Two tells him of the man from Zairon who entered a restricted area, but he thinks that she’s trying to send him on a wild goose chase.
THERE ARE ONLY TWO MINUTES LEFT IN THIS, THE SEASON FINALE. HOW ON EARTH ARE THEY GOING TO WRAP THIS UP?!
Android finds Nyx unconscious on the floor of the bridge. Kierken has gone into the restricted area that Two told him about, and finds a man in a Zairon uniform standing in front of a console. He orders the man to step away from the console, and shoots him when he refuses to. As the man falls to the ground, he manages to hit a button. The words CRITICAL OVERLOAD display on the screen. An explosion rips through the room, and we see a section of the station explode from space. The field keeping Six in his cell disappears, and Two calls the rest of the crew on the coms, telling them to get to the Marauder. Three regains consciousness on the floor of the alleyway Nieman left him in. As his vision clears, we see that it’s Lieutenant Anders (Jeff Teravainen). Wait, I thought he was dead! Six killed him as the Raza crew was escaping from Hyperion-8!
We see Six and Two running down different hallways, and chaos erupts in the council chambers. Truffault grabs Five and tells her to come with her. The wall next to Two blows out, sending her flying. On the Raza, Android is holding the hand of Nyx’s lifeless body. Finally, we see Eos-7 blow up in a gigantic fireball and—
Blackness.
What kind of finale was that?! It didn’t answer any of our burning questions, and it (seemingly, at least) ended in everyone dying! Nyx must be dead, because Android wasn’t trying to save her, and everyone was still on the station when it blew! Well, I guess we’ll find out next year when Season 3 of Dark Matter premieres.
