“Supergirl” Episode Review: Anger Management

cw supergirl 1x06 red faced recap

In Supergirl “Red Faced,” Kara must face a rogue robot designed by Lucy Lane’s father as well as control her bubbling anger before it gets the better of her. Meanwhile, Alex learns new information about her father’s death and Grant deals with her mother.

“Red Faced” has a lot going on. There’s a very heavy handed moral about learning to control anger rather than let it take control, although the payoff of Kara finally letting her rage out was a truly breathtaking scene, with fantastic music and dynamite acting from Melissa Benoist. It also dovetailed with Grant’s monster of a mother, as once again, she gives Kara a lecture after Kara finally snaps at her boss- again, Benoist kills it here.

There was less action this episode, which is good because the Red Tornado was a laughable looking monstrosity that killed any seriousness the subplot had going for it. At least Glenn Morshower showed up as General Lane and while he was a bit cartoonish in his pure hatred of Supergirl- And James. And the DEO. And his coworkers.- he was decently acted.

There’s also a major development in Alex’s quest to find out what happened to her father. Winn digs up hard evidence that hints that Henshaw was responsible, turning him from a person of interest to a straight up suspect. It will be interesting to see how Alex will deal with Henshaw next time, although her relationship with Lord seemed to go off okay despite her being fully aware of his confession last week.

“Red Faced” was another busy hour with tons of setup for the future, including Kara’s bleeding at the end, but was a little light on action for a superhero show. This week was more drama oriented, but the episode was better for it. It’s an interesting and intriguing bridge for the episodes to follow and, again, it’s great that a show is getting so much done in only six episodes.
