Teen Wolf‘s lackluster first half of Season 5 was mostly thanks to the poorly conceived and executed villains, the Dread Doctors. Unlike previous seasons where Scott (Tyler Posey) and his friends battled far superior, nefarious creatures, the Dread Doctors and the storyline that came along with them was very underwhelming, to say the least.

Fortunately, the latter half of the supernatural series’ penultimate season inches back to its true form. Season 5 Part 2 does away with the Doctors, for the most part, and instead focuses on a new antagonist– a beast whose true identity is a mystery Scott and his gang have to uncover before it’s too late.

While the setup and execution of the Beast and its deep mythology was promising for nearly whole of the entire remaining episodes, the final reveal and explanation became a little too convoluted.

Setbacks aside, the episodes contained on this DVD set contains great stories, which include a fan-favorite character coming to terms with his new-found abilities. Part 2 also quickly, conveniently and neatly brings back the Dread Doctors and cleverly ties up the story in a nice, little bow. The season ends with the death of a few beloved characters and the surprising departure of another.

Final moments of the season finale offer a nice closing to the series with the gang at Beacon Hills High. It’s almost as if they had planned it as a series finale. Since Teen Wolf was renewed (which will allow it to reach a milestone 100th episode), a cryptic and ominous scene was attached at the very end, opening up the series for its sixth and final season.

The DVD set unfortunately comes with just one bonus feature. The nearly seven-minute featurette consisting primarily of interviews, which appear to be at either a premiere or release party, feature the cast along with creator Jeff Davis reflecting on the many different villains from the season.

“The thing I enjoy most about the Dread Doctors is the way they come upon their prey– very silently yet with these strange clicking sounds,” Davis says. “They must smell awful,” adds Posey about the centuries old villains, “and yes, I’m creeped out by all their tools. Their tools are very creepy. Creepy tools!”

Davis also talks about the inspiration for the Doctors, details which OMFGTV got to get first-hand when we spoke with him at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Not surprisingly, the cast echoed our thoughts on the Beast. Dylan Sprayberry pointing out that particular creature as his Season 5B favorite “because it’s bigger, scarier, and I just think it’s so rad.” “Everything about the Beast is the coolest!” adds Posey.

The rest of the featurette discusses why Jeff Davis decided to go with an all-CG Beast rather than alternating between visual and special effects, the technical discussions that went on about the Hellhound, and the reason why the Desert Wolf was introduced this season.

Fans of the series should definitely pick up this DVD set. Though it lacks in bonus features, it does come with a very cool, limited-edition collectible poster.
