At San Diego Comic-Con this past summer, The Originals star Joseph Morgan talked to OMFGTV about his character of Klaus Mikaelson and the upcoming five-year time jump for the show’s upcoming fourth season.

“I think the huge turning point has been his daughter,” Morgan said. “For a guy who’s been around for a thousand years, that’s the one thing he never had any experience in. So for me, that’s been the evolution. And last we saw him at the end of season 3, he did something to his own detriment for his family. I don’t think that’s ever been done before by him. So, I think he’s one step closer to redemption.
Morgan also addressed Marcel’s betrayal and said that Klaus would handle the betrayal, “probably violently.” He also added, “He loves Marcel like a son and Marcel betrayed him. Some might say he was justified and I think it’s been a long time coming. Ever since he made Marcel pick up that coin in season 1, and took the city from him, Marcel’s been waiting. He wanted to believe in the Mikaelsons and believe in Klaus, but I think maybe Klaus understands a little bit where his coming from, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to react any less violently.”

When asked about Klaus’s journey over the course of “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” Morgan admitted, “I thought I’d be done after one season. I thought I’d be killed off as villains are. They get to the end of a season, like Dahlia or the trinity of Lucien and those guys, and they get killed off, it’s what villains do.”
“I just started having so much fun with it and the fan response was so great. I started to suspect there was something there. I didn’t expect to come this far. It’ll be interesting to see where we go from here. I feel like we’ve passed the middle of the journey. There was a definite beginning where he was a villain, and then there’s been a chance for redemption and season 4 picks up five years later, so it’s really like chapter on it’s own.”
Finally, we asked Morgan if he ever felt that Klaus crossed the line on the show. “Yeah, but I like that about him. Frequently, he does that, like killing Gia and cursing Hayley at the end of season 2, and killing Mikael, and his father, and his mom, and his auntie, and his brother and sister. (Laughs) Frequently, he crosses the line. But I like that about him.”
The Originals premieres Friday, March 17, at 8pm on The CW.
