Ryan Murphy Hides “Scream Queens” Easter Egg in “American Horror Story: Freak Show”

The Devil is in the Details.

scream-queens-teased-american-horror-story-freak-showAs some fans of FX’s hit anthology series American Horror Story may know, creator Ryan Murphy likes to hide little hints and clues as to what viewers can expect for its completely refreshed upcoming season. Little did we know that he dropped a little Easter Egg for FOX’s upcoming horror-comedy Scream Queens, that at the time was completely dismissable.

It was 2013 when Ryan Murphy was working on American Horror Story‘s third iteration “Coven” when the idea for a college campus rocked by a series of murders was conceived. So a year later when “Freak Show” came along, more developments of Queens had been made, and a small tease of the new series was included in the season of the carnies.

Throughout the season, while Jessica Lange’s Elsa Mars travels to acquire her own collection of oddities, she carries around a tote bag with an image of a smiling red devil. An even larger, more colorful physical version actually sits at the front of the carnival with an open mouth welcoming patrons who dare enter its quarters.

Granted, the red devil on Elsa’s tote bag doesn’t remotely resemble the masked killer in Scream Queens, but we believe it was definitely an Easter Egg.

What do you think? Are we way off base, or did Ryan Murphy stealthily give us an early taste of Scream Queens?
