Jane the Virgin Recap: Confessions

jane-the-virgin-108-chapter-eight-recap

On the December 8 installment of The CW’s Jane the Virgin, secrets were revealed, someone ends up in bed with an escort, and an intervention sends another to the mental hospital.

Let’s go through some of the craziness in “Chapter Eight.”

THE VIRGIN DIARIES | Rafael (Justin Baldoni) discovers over scotch, chips, and spinach artichoke dip that Jane (Gina Rodriguez) is a virgin and that she’s never had sex. She explains that it was a promise she had made to her grandmother to wait until marriage, and that her father’s stepdaughters had started a website that went viral and blasting that she was a pregnant virgin. And now that Rafael knows the truth, Jane’s mother Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) believes that that information might change his feelings toward her.

SPILL THE TEA | Luisa (Yara Martinez) returns from her ayahuasca (a psychedelic vine brewed into tea) retreat in Peru a new woman — clear of all the negativity in her life with the help of the tea and a shaman. During her tea trips, she would always visualize Rose (Bridget Regan) which made her realize that she still wants to be with her. Luisa wants Rose to come clean about their relationship and tell her father about their affair, but Rose is afraid that it will ruin her marriage. “Tell my father,” Luisa says, “or I will.”

BED FELLOWS | Rafael meets a beautiful woman named Candyce (Julie Berman) at the hotel bar and they chat and drink. The next morning, Jane puts on her room service hat and delivers a couple of drinks for a guest who insisted that Jane be the one to deliver it. When Jane enters the room, she sees the woman in bed with a nearly naked Rafael! Did Jane’s virgin news prompt Raf to sleep with the first woman he ran into?

RELIGION | Candyce finds out that Jane is the “Jane the Virgin” that she’s heard so much about. She even has one of those necklaces that the nuns at the Catholic school were giving out. Candyce finds Jane and confesses that she is an escort and was hired online to drug Rafael and have Jane deliver the drinks and catch the pair of them in bed to make it look like they’ve slept together. She confesses because, regardless of her occupation, she’s very religious. She asks Jane for a hug because she has a son who she hasn’t seen in a long time and is hoping for a miracle. That’s when Jane reveals to her that she is not some religious messiah and that her pregnancy was just the result of a medical mistake. Jane, feeling bad, offers Candyce a hug anyway.

COMMITTED | Rose saves her behind and lies to Rafael that Luisa is about to reveal some news that is absolute nonsense. “The things that she was saying to me, all these sexual things, and I didn’t know how to respond. I didn’t know what to do.” After talking about it with Rafael and his father, the three of them call Luisa up to their room where they have set up an intervention with Dr. Perez. “You’re having some sort of episode,” Rose tells Luisa. “Fantasizing about me.” Luisa then realizes that she’s been setup to make it look like she’s crazy and after a small outburst, she is taken away.

OTHER NOTES
 • The news about Candyce and her son was heartbreaking, and I hope the writers will revisit that story and we’ll get to see them reunited in a future episode.
 • It was a bit hard to watch as Rose threw Luisa under the bus and made it look like their whole love affair was just something in her head. I am hoping that there is some kind of evidence somewhere that will reveal that Luisa was indeed telling the truth.

What did you think of the episode? Did you know that Rafael had been drugged when you first saw him in bed with Candyce? Did you feel bad that Rose lied about her love affair to save her marriage? Leave a comment below and tell us!
