Teen Wolf Creator on New Blood, Kira Spinoff, and a Movie?

The fourth season of MTV’s hit supernatural series Teen Wolf introduced viewers to a lot of fresh faces. In addition to the series regular promotions of Arden Cho and Shelley Hennig, the werewolf drama brought on new talents Dylan Sprayberry, Khylin Rhambo, Mason Dye, and Samantha Logan.

During the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con OMFGTV sat down with series creator Jeff Davis where he talked about the new blood.

On the handful of new characters, Davis says they add new dynamics to the show and doesn’t see it as a way of replacing old characters. “I see it as a way of bringing new relationships to our main characters,” he says. “One of the things I said earlier in the writers room this season was I want to give Scott (Tyler Posey) and Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) a little brother. We never said we wanted a new werewolf; we said little brother and it’s been really fun to see that relationship occur.”

And speaking of main characters, there was chatter earlier in the year of Kira getting a Kitsune spinoff. We asked Jeff about the status of the offshoot and told us that as of now, he’s committed to Teen Wolf. “If we did a spinoff, MTV would want me to be heavily involved in it and right now Teen Wolf takes up pretty much 24 hours of my day. So for now, I want to maintain as much of the quality as we can [for Teen Wolf].”

Part of maintaining that quality is keeping the show fresh and exciting. Fans of the show were given quite a shock when they found out that the very sexy Deputy Jordan Parrish (Ryan Kelley) was on the hit list as one of Beacon Hill’s supernatural beings. Not only do fans not know who or what he is, but Parrish and his portrayer Kelley don’t know either! Davis promises that we will get answers soon and teases that what he is “is something new” and we will “get hints to what it is” in the coming episodes.

While we wait to see what kind of supernatural category he falls into and what sort of abilities and powers he may have, we’ll continue to see Banshee Lydia (Holland Roden) struggle with hers. “What I really like about Lydia is that it’s a slow burn for her,” Davis explains. “I want to see her struggling with her power and trying to learn it. I think if the journey is that much harder the payoff will be that much bigger. Holland is phenomenal this season. You’ll actually see more of that struggle to find her power and to utilize it in the next few episodes.”

Meanwhile, as Lydia comes into her powers, Derek is starting to lose his. But will his loss of power become permanent? “You’ll see,” Davis teases. “It’s a very big deal for him in terms of an identity crisis and actually for the plot. We wanted to give him a storyline that was meaningful. I think it’s most meaningful for Derek because in the first season he started out believing that power was everything. And you see a big arc throughout the seasons [and] in [Season] 3A, he finally says ‘I don’t care about the powers,’ and he tests that.”

BEST BITES

• We are still a few episodes away until the Season 4 finale, but it’s good to know that Jeff Davis already has an idea in mind for Season 5. He wouldn’t elaborate much further, but he tells us that he does know how the series will end and specifically how the show will end for Scott and Stiles.

• During Thursday’s panel, the cast joked about MTV creating a reality series that followed the cast around. But during Friday’s press room, Davis said the idea of a movie instead would be fun. “Tyler Posey and I talked about how it would be really fun to go off and do a movie after the show ends. I think that’ll be great to get a bigger budget. We’ll get to do spectacular stunts and have plenty of time to shoot everything.”

• As for Teen Wolf without its leading man, Davis doesn’t ever see that happening. “I can’t imagine doing the show without Tyler Posey,” Davis says. “To me he is the teen wolf. He has grown into that role of superhero so beautifully. I love watching him on screen.”
