“3 Body Problem” Episode ‘Only Advance’ Recap: A Star Is Born

Recap of episode “Only Advance”

The penultimate episode of the first season of 3 Body Problem gets deep, sentimental and at times, really depressing as we near the end of the season. Will has a difficult decision to make as Ye tries to make peace and Auggie takes charge of her project. Bring the tissues for this one.

Don’t Lose Your Head | As Will (Alex Downing) and Saul (Jovan Adepo) are discussing the star that he spent $19 million on and named after Jin (Jess Hong), Will makes Saul promise to not tell Jin that he was the one who bought it in her name, before Will passes out. The next day, Will is in the hospital, but FaceTimes Jin and lets her know that he’s okay.

Jin and Wade (Liam Cunningham) witness a Russian scientist bring an ape out of a cryo sleep pod and the ape seems fine, aside from vomiting up a banana. After this, Wade announces that he will be the one to be on the probe launched into space. When Jin asks why, he simply says, “Only Advance.”

Last Chance | In the hospital, Will is visited by his sister and her husband who demand that he leave them all of the inheritance their mother left him, to which immediately agrees. Back with Wade and company, they realize that the probe doesn’t have the capacity to carry a human body, so Wade proposes that they simply remove a human’s brain and place it on the probe so that the aliens can reconstruct the body once they receive it. Jin and Auggie (Eiza Gonzalez) are appalled by the idea, even more so when Wade suggests that Will be the one for the project. After Wade makes a call to an unseen man, Auggie tells Jin that she’s leaving the project.

Auggie goes to her boss at the lab, who prepares to fire her, but Auggie uploads the schematics for her nanofiber to the Internet for everybody to use, complete with workarounds so whomever uses the specs won’t get sued. Jin visits Will in the hospital and orders him not to go through with the project, but Will seems to be considering the idea. He finally tells Jin that he loves her, which only makes her cry in his arms.

Saying Goodbye |  Ye (Rosalind Chao) visits Saul at Vera’s tombstone and tells him a joke about Einstein being told not to play with God before getting on a plane with a man following her onboard. In a trailer in the middle of nowhere, Tatiana (Marlo Kelly) is contacted by the aliens through her TV who tell her that they have a job for her.

Wade forces Will to sign a loyalty agreement to mankind, but he refuses to. Regardless, Wade approves him for the project, but as Will is being prepped for the procedure, Wade tells Jin that Will was the one to give her the star. Jin storms out and races to see Will, but she arrives too late- Will’s head has been removed.

Ye and the man who is following her arrive at the site of the satellite where she sent the signal to the aliens. She explores the ruins of the lab and prepares to leap off the cliff to her death, but is stopped by Tatiana, who offers her a better way to die. Ye asks to watch one last sunset before she dies and Tatiana says that she deserves a rest.
