The iconic and terrifying Alien franchise hasn’t had the best luck lately, despite numerous sequels that the hardcore fans haven’t embraced. Now, a new sequel is on the horizon, except, judging from this new trailer, this one is bringing the horror franchise back to its roots.

20th Century Studios has unleashed the trailer for their highly anticipated Alien: Romulus, which looks like the scariest and most intense Alien film yet. Directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead) and produced by the architect of the franchise Ridley Scott (Gladiator), the new installment unleashes a group of facehuggers on the crew of a scavenging spaceship with horrific results.

Starring Cailee Spaeny (Bad Times At the El Royale), Isabella Merced (Transformers: The Last Knight), Spike Fern (Aftersun) and Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), the sequel was originally set for a straight-to-streaming debut on Hulu, until 20th Century Studios saw a rough cut and ordered a theatrical release. Also, Scott and Aliens director James Cameron have both spoken highly of the film, so expectations for the film are sky high among die hard fans.

The brief synopsis simply reads, “While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

The Alien franchise began in 1979 with the Ridley Scott classic and continued in the following sequels; 1986’s Aliens, 1992’s Alien 3, 1997’s Alien: Resurrection and the spinoff films Alien Vs Predator and Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem. In 2012, Scott directed the prequel film, Prometheus, and the follow up, Alien: Covenant, the last entry in the franchise in 2017.

Alien: Romulus hits theaters on August 16.
