“Motherland: Fort Salem” Episode ‘Book Club’ Recap: A Witch’s Place

Alright, Switches: who is ready to start their own Book Club to take down the patriarchal government? The latest episode of Motherland: Fort Salem gave us so much goodness! We got Tally and her mom, Scylla and Edwin really get to bond, and Silver declares was on the Cession. ‘Book Club’ was written by Nikki McCauley and directed by Shannon Kohli. Here’s what went down!

Invasion | Silver (Victor Webster) and Brandt (Emilie Ullerup) are having a meeting with several important people when Alban (Bob Frazer) interrupts to alert them all of Alder’s (Lyne Renée) return and strength. Silver tells everyone that he wants to invade the Cession, and his reasoning is because they broke their treaty with the U.S. by not extraditing our group of Witches. But Silver’s real reason behind the invasion is that he wants witches to fight witches. He later televises his announcement of the invasion to the country.

Book Club | Our group has split up for the time being, all with different tasks to accomplish before meeting back at Le Chasseur. Tally (Jessica Sutton) goes back home to check in on her mother and warn her of what’s coming. When she gets there Tally first has to hide from the government men questioning her mom about her whereabouts. Tally learns that witches have to wear collars in public that prevent them from doing any work. Tally tries to convince her mom, May (Jillian Fargey), to run, but May refuses. She has Book Club that night. Tally soon finds out what Book Club really is.

May Craven is hosting a meeting where her and friends are coming up with a plan to help witches; they’re going to destroy the genealogical records of witches in the city. Tally and May have a role reversal from when Tally was leaving for the Army. Now Tally understands how hard it was for her mom to let her go. Tally decides to go with the Book Club to destroy the records. When they arrive at the building the records are being housed in Tally goes on watch and uses her Sight to help them. She sees something in the basement and takes her mom down there with her to check it out. The basement is full of witch collars, so they decide to burn them. With this comes the realization that this will not stop the government, just slow them down.

They destroy the building and everything inside and get home before they can get caught. When the men watching May burst into her home they just see a group of women discussing a book. They couldn’t have possibly snuck out and destroyed that building undetected.

The next day Tally and her mom really bond over breaking dishes and Tally’s Doomsday vision. It was a sweet moment, then Tally has to say goodbye to her mom and head back to the Cession.

Fort Salem | Abigail (Ashley Nicole Williams) and Adil (Tony Giroux) get Alder back to Fort Salem so they can reunite her with the Mother Mycelium. But before that happens they meet with Izadora (Emilie Leclerc) and learn the shocking truth about what happened to Penelope (Mellany Barros) and why they can’t come out with the truth yet. Abigail is completely shocked the girl is alive. After, they get Alder to the Mycelium and she goes into it. How crazy did that part look?!?

Alder briefly returns to Fort Salem to be seen and give hope to those there and to remind them that it is “a witch’s place.” Colonel Jarrett (Aaron Douglas) is not happy about this and tries to catch Alder, but she’s gone by the time he gets to where she was.

Road Trip | Scylla (Amalia Holm) and Edwin (Hrothgar Mathews) are on their own adventure to get Edwin to safety. The pair get into an argument at one point, but we discover it’s because Edwin doesn’t want anything to happen to Scylla, she is all he has left. Scylla decides to try to contact Raelle (Taylor Hickson), and it works! She lets Edwin talk to his daughter briefly before Mycelium Willa destroys the connection.

When they get to Quinn (Sandra Ferens), Scylla explains to her and Edwin the whole Willa situation. Quinn decides to use Far Speech to try to contact Willa, and it works. Willa actually comes out of the ceiling to meet with them. She has an emotional reunion with Edwin before he and Scylla beg her to let Raelle go. But it doesn’t work and Mycelium Willa leaves.

Before Scylla leaves to go back to Le Chasseur, her and Edwin have a very touching moment. Edwin trusts Scylla, and that must mean the world for her to hear that.
