“Astrid & Lilly Save the World” Season Finale ‘Guts’ Recap: It Takes Guts to Be an Organ Donor

In the Astrid & Lilly Save the World finale episode, “Guts” (written by Noelle Stehman & Betsy Van Stone and directed by Jordan Canning), lies are splayed and exposed, and relationships and resilience are tested. Can Astrid and Lilly muster up the courage and strength to defeat the universe’s most evil foe yet?
**Spoiler alert** Hell yes, they can!

Monster Soup | Astrid and Lilly bust out a happy dance when they harvest the tenth and final monster organ for the orb. Alas, just when our gals thought they’d be able to be normal teenagers for a night, the celebration is abruptly halted when Brutus informs them that the Guardian plans to crash the much-anticipated school dance that just so happens to fall on the night of the Blood Moon lunar eclipse.

The only way to destroy the Guardian is to remove the Master Key from around his neck – no key means no powers. Otherwise, the creep is untouchable. Whatever the girls do, they can’t allow the Guardian to activate his orb because that would mean “monster soup” for every living person on Earth. No pressure.

Basic | With the impending doom of the Guardian’s arrival, Astrid decides to try talking some sense into Sparrow one last time. He proves yet again that he is fully entranced by the Guardian’s spell and all but rejects her in front of his crowd of fellow cult minions.

Astrid and Lilly follow Sparrow back to the church in the hopes that he’ll lead them to the Guardian’s lair. Sparrow’s plan is exactly that. The gals sneak down into the basement and find a basic-looking white dude in the ultimate dad attire taking a snooze. Is really the threat they’ve been warned against?! Astrid and Lilly reach for the Master Key that hangs around his neck, but he wakes up. The Guardian swiftly grabs Astrid and Lilly by the wrist with the intention to mark them. To his surprise, he’s unable to possess them like the other teens. Breaking free from his grip, the gal pals escape scared out of their wits.

Banned | Astrid and Lilly are more terrified than ever to face the Guardian. Their first plan of action is to do what they can to cancel the dance. After attempts to spread rumors of asbestos poisoning, an emergency rat situation, and explosive diarrhea fails to deter Pine Academy High’s students from avoiding the dance, Lilly hops on the intercom with an impressive impression of Vice Principal Michelle, telling the high school that the dance has been canceled. Michelle busts them in the act and she isn’t having any of their shenanigans on her big night! The heated VP decides to ban them from attending.

If the dance can’t be canceled, the monster hunters are going to need some extra hands. It’s time to bring in the troops! Astrid and Lilly assemble Candace, Tate, and Eggs in their office, aka their favorite bathroom stall, and give them the full DL on the Guardian’s plan to crash the dance party.

Betrayed & Brokenhearted | With the Guardian filling up their plate of responsibilities, Brutus urges the girls not to worry about closing Earth’s portal. He’s got it covered. Before parting ways, Astrid and Lilly give Brutus a present wrapped in hand-illustrated gift paper. With a lump in his throat, Brutus thanks them and expresses that they are the closest thing to family that he’s had since his own.

Before making their way to the dance, Astrid and Lilly make a pitstop to visit Brutus and close the portal with him. When they arrive, he’s wearing the Pudge Patrol lettermen jacket they made for him. Behind him opens a portal gateway and Brutus confesses to his friends that he gave them the wrong orb. Brutus used them in order to open a portal that would allow him to try to save the love of his life from a horrifying dimension she’s trapped in.

Brutus’s betrayal leaves A and L feeling defeated and brokenhearted, but they remind themselves of how far they’ve come and how much they’ve grown and accomplished since slaying their first monster. They pick themselves up off the ground one final time and make their way into the school dance.

The Showdown | Astrid and Lilly arrive at the school dance looking fly as hell in their pink Pudge Patrol garb ready to kick ass. But first, the school dance royalty must be announced. Tate Hudson takes the crown as King and our girl Lilly is crowned Queen. You go, Lills!

Just as the gang is getting their dance on, in walks the Guardian, Christine, and their brainwashed youth group army. Frightened students ready themselves to flee, but no one can’t outrun the freezing spell the Guardian casts upon them.

The Guardian then orders Sparrow and his minions to restrain Astrid and Lilly so that he can harvest the last of the entrails from his human victims. When his eyes fall on Candace, Lilly calls out to the Guardian in desperation. Knowing that Candace is important to Lilly, he approaches her frozen body to extract her guts. Christine intercedes and begs the Guardian to take anyone else’s organs but her daughters. The Guardian takes Christine’s as an involuntary donation.

The lunar eclipse is near complete and the orb is filled with the last of its required bodily organs. Astrid and Lilly are sure this is the end of it all, but Eggs shows up after had been in the bathroom when the Guardian had frozen everyone. Eggs unties the girls and gives them a note left by Brutus stating that the Master Key can be used to close their portal and all is not lost! Eggs then goes on to distract the Guardian, giving Astrid and Lilly the chance to snatch the Master Key from the orb before the Blood Moon is completely eclipsed by Earth’s shadow and rendering the Guardian powerless.

Together, the three friends unleash a brutal assault that combines all of the combat methods the monster hunters have learned over the last several days, ultimately impaling the Guardian and leading him to his final demise. The freezing spell is lifted and the Guardian’s possession of his minions’ minds fades away just as soon as he did.

With his head cleared, Sparrow finds his way to Astrid and the happy couple is reunited. For Candace, the aftermath of the blood bath doesn’t bring the same kind of warm-and-fuzzies. She learns that her mom was gutted and she is left parentless.

To Be Continued | Before Astrid and Lilly can properly celebrate saving the world, they need to close the portal once and for all. The Master Key is tossed into the portal and the chapter is closed. Only, you know what they say about chapters – where one closes, another begins. Moments after the portal shut, a second one beams open and our monster-hunting baddies gain new superpowers.

They aren’t the only ones to receive powers. It looks like VP Michelle is walking away from the dance zapped with a little something of her own and it’s not going to be good.
