This week on Supergirl, Lena tries out magic, Dreamer gets her brain broke, and Nyxly gets a dose of humanity. Just another Tuesday in National City! Here’s our recap of “Magical Thinking.”
Welcome to the Tower | Kara (Melissa Benoist) informs the team that William (Staz Nair) will be embedded at the tower with the team for a big story and Lena (Katie McGrath) must keep her distance in order to protect her and everyone’s secret identities. William stops by and agrees to keep most of what he sees confidential just as Nyxly (Peta Sergeant) finds another totem as a lucky charm of an MMA fighter. She activates it, causing everyone nearby to go mad and start fighting everyone around them.
Lena works on a spell from her mother’s book that could track down Nyxly, but it goes wrong and ends up disorienting Dreamer (Nicole Maines). As Kelly (Azie Tesfai) bonds with an orphaned girl named Esme, who has just been adopted by a foster family, William is given an ultimatum by Rojas (Julie Gonzalo) that he needs a big scoop to keep his job. Supergirl uses her psychic connection to Nyxly to feel that she is now compassionate and super happy as she finds another totem.
To the Gardens | Lena continues to work on the spell and goes with Supergirl and William to the botanical gardens to find a specific plant she needs for the spell, but using it causes a nearby woman to go nuts and attack them, while Nyxly is suddenly unable to kill a guard at the location of the totem. Lena immediately assumes this is because her spell went wrong, while Nyxly realizes that she’s draining the compassion and humanity from others and it’s flooding into her.
Supergirl thinks they can cast Lena’s spell again and overload Nyxly with their compassion, but Lena refuses, saying that it’ll cause more chaos and hurt more people. Supergirl agrees, but later tells William, J’onn (David Harewood) and Alex (Chyler Leigh) that they’re going through with it and William tells them all that he’ll expose this in his article.
And the Nyxly’s Heart Grew Three Sizes That Day | Lena performs the spell and National City goes crazy with anger, as Esme’s Foster mother leaves her outside to fend for herself before being saved by Guardian. All this causes Nyxly to overload with emotion. She can’t take it anymore and lets the totem go above the city as Supergirl catches it before it hits the ground. William hands in his article to Rojas and tells her that he dictates the story, not her. Kelly and Alex go to see Esme after her foster family gives her up and they look understandingly at each other…
