“Supergirl” Recap: The Fire of Courage

This week’s Supergirl episode is called “The Gauntlet,” dramatic hand gestures not included, so we added our own. In this episode, Supergirl and company must track down a courage totem that unleashes dangerous power, leading Supergirl to a personal journey.

Giving the Game Away | As Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and the newly back from Newfoundland Lena (Katie McGrath) gather information on the totems from the Fortress of Solitude, Nyxly (Peta Sergeant) tracks down the totem of courage to a museum, which happens to be the slingshot David used to kill Goliath.

Supergirl and company find Nyxly about to steal it, along with William (Staz Nair), who was tipped off by Nia (Nicole Maines) for a huge scoop for CatCo, and Supergirl laser eyes the slingshot in half, causing an energy burst to affect everyone nearby before Nyxly escapes with half the slingshot.

Running the Gauntlet | A Kryptonian witch from a knowledge crystal from the Fortress tells Supergirl that unless she can complete *Dramatic hand gestures* the Gauntlet before Nyxly does, the affected people will become madly courageous until it destroys them. Supergirl uses her half of the slingshot, which tells her to face the moment she lacked true courage.

She then flashes back to the night she saved Alex’s (Chyler Leigh) plane from crashing and ignored a mugging nearby, but helping the victim doesn’t pass *Dramatic hand gestures* the Gauntlet. Nyxly faces a similar moment, where she murders her treacherous father, but gets the same result, which causes a few people from the museum to go crazy and for some reason, an iguana to become a dragon.

When Supergirl, Alex and J’onn (David Harewood) arrive at the museum, Alex and J’onn are so courageous that they’re basically suicidal idiots that fight the dragon head on. Realizing that they’re affected by the totem’s energy, Supergirl once again tries her test, but fails again, while Mitch suggests that Nyxly’s test is to kill her brother who betrayed her.

Megastorm | One of the affected museum scientists becomes so confident that she creates a device that creates a superstorm that threatens the city. Lena consults the Kryptonian witch, who tells her that Lena’s own magic in her blood can stop Nyxly’s, as Nyxly goes through her trial again and tells her brother just how much his betrayal hurt her and this passes the test and causes Supergirl’s end of the totem to try to go to Nyxly’s end.

Realizing that the affected members of her team can’t help her with too much courage, Supergirl releases the totem to Nyxly so the team can dissipate the storm. This causes Supergirl and Nyxly to see each other’s memories as they both pass out.

Supergirl is convinced that she and Nyxly now have a psychic connection, while William now has the courage to ask Kara to be embedded with Supergirl for a story for CatCo. Lena tells Kara about her magical bloodline and how she can potentially use it to stop Nyxly.

Supergirl airs Tuesdays on The CW.
