Supergirl has finally lost its mind. “Mxy in the Middle” jumps beyond the shark in this lunacy filled hour that features witches, a musical number and sooo much eye rolling. You’re not ready.
This Gets Complicated | After freeing Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) from Nyxly’s (Peta Sergeant) trap, Mxy (Thomas Lennon) reveals to team Supergirl a very long and very complex backstory in a song. From what I can gather, Nyxly needs seven totems representing various ideals to use to create a power strong enough to take over the universe and I know how ridiculous this sounds, trust me.
As Supergirl and crew try to trap Nyxly by reversing the device that gave her powers back, Nia (Nicole Maines) confesses to Brainy (Jesse Rath) her role in Nyxly’s return and he understands why she did it, but advises her to tell Kara. Meanwhile, Lena (Katie McGrath) heads to Newfoundland for information on her birth mother, but the innkeepers turn her away as soon as they hear her name. She heads to a bar to meet Peggy, the daughter of someone who knew her mother, who informs Lena that her mother murdered Peggy’s mother.
A Cat. Sure. | Peggy continues to say that Lena’s mother was in a magical coven. Yes, you read that right. Naturally, Lena doesn’t buy it, but Peggy isn’t telling her more. Meanwhile, Nyxly summons a giant pink cat to terrorize the city. Yes, you read that right. Dreamer nearly opens a dream portal to trap the cat, but Brainy stops her, saying that she could trap herself in the dream realm forever. Nyxly shows up and demands that they hand over Mxy by 2 pm. Nia finally tells Kara about her deal with Nyxly and Kara is shockingly understanding about it and doesn’t blame her in the least.
Here’s Where it Gets Weird | I know this sounds crazy in a show called “Supergirl” but here goes one of the most out of left field turns in TV history: Lena somehow finds a GPS that takes her to a member of her mother’s coven living in a cave. She tells Lena that they were all using magic to scare off Peggy’s abusive father, but accidentally killed him and the town blamed Lena’s mom.
Yeah… Back in National City, Nia uses Brainy’s image inducer to disguise herself as Mxy to trap Nyxly. That falls apart quickly and Nyxly uses her magic to trap Supergirl, Dreamer and the rest. Mxy gives himself up to Nyxly to spare the team and she leaves with Mxy in tow, but he slaps a power dampening cuff on her first. Team Supergirl pledges to stop Nyxly as she sets out to find the totem of courage.
