“Supergirl” Recap: Changing of the Guard

Supergirl gives a few of its stronger female characters a much deserved spotlight in “Dream Weaver,” in which Kelly takes the case of a troubled alien kid, leading to a shocking conspiracy. Nia meets an unlikely face, who offers her a troubling deal…

Kelly On the Case | After obliterating the others during game night, Kelly (Azie Tesfai) announces that she’s working a case on an alien kid named Joey who’s being raised in foster care after his brother Orlando is arrested. Rojas (Julie Gonzalo) orders Kara (Melissa Benoist) and William (Staz Nair) to get an exclusive with a superhero, while Nia (Nicole Maines) keeps falling asleep and dreaming of her late mother.

Kelly goes to see Joey at a very shady foster home that forces the alien kids to wear power diffusing cuffs and Joey tells her that Orlando could die from overusing his powers at the prison’s work placement program. Kelly asks Kara to get her into the prison to find out more, while J’onn (David Harewood) and Alex (Chyler Leigh) track a series of truck robberies.

Dream Crashed | Nia once again dreams of her mother, but this time, Myxly (Peta Sergeant) shows up and tries to get Nia to use her powers to free her from the dream realm- promising her that if she does so, she can bring Nia’s mother back to life for one day. Nia wakes up before agreeing to anything, but is clearly tempted.

Kara and Kelly talk to the warden of the prison Orlando is in, who denies knowing of any wrongdoing, but when Kara uses her powers to follow Orlando’s prison bus, she finds him and the other inmates stealing nuclear materials. Kara brings evidence of this to the warden, but he shuts down Kara exposing the corruption in her article. Nia and Myxly talk again, but this time, an owl attacks Myxly and tells Nia not to trust her.

Follow the Money | After some detective work, Kara and William find out that the prison warden is on the payroll of a mob boss and his men are using alien workers to build a bomb. After a heart to heart with Alex about her ability to help others, Kelly returns to Joey’s orphanage to find the caretaker abusing him and vows to put a stop to it. To that end, she sneaks into the orphanage and downloads security camera footage of the abuse.

Supergirl tracks down the prison guards forcing Orlando and the other inmates to build the bomb and knocks out the guards, but Orlando isn’t convinced that she will help them. Cue a powerful Supergirl speech that should be patented at this point and she promises to help Orlando and the other inmates go free. After Kelly exposes the abusive caretaker, she goes home to Alex and tells her that she needs to take up the Guardian mantle. Then, Nia returns to the dream realm and agrees to Myxly’s terms.

Supergirl airs Tuesdays on The CW.
