“Motherland: Fort Salem” Recap: Light ‘Em Up

Freeform’s Motherland: Fort Salem delivered another stellar episode! Tally finally gets some answers, Abigail gets the motivation she needs, and Raelle finds out Scylla isn’t in prison. ‘Brianna’s Favorite Pencil’ was written by Nicole Avenia, and directed by Jason Stone.

Answers | The episode kicks off with a terrible attack against Khalida (Kylee Brown) and Adil (Tony Giroux). They fortunately survive, but General Sharma (Chelsea Gill) is not so lucky.

Tally (Jessica Sutton) finally gets the confrontation with Alder (Lyne Renée) that she’s been wanting. Alder says Nicte Batan was wiped from history books because she was a deserter, but I’m still skeptical about that. Then Alder turns the tables on Tally because she shouldn’t be coming to the General with such accusations. Tally brings up the dreams she’s been having of Alder’s memories, and Alder quickly dismisses her with a promise to have Isadora do something about it.

Raelle (Taylor Hickson) confronts Anacostia (Demetria McKinney) about Scylla (Amalia Holm), and gets some answers. But Anacostia refuses to tell Raelle where Scylla got the photograph of her.

Abigail (Ashley Nicole Williams) is well enough to leave the infirmary and confronts her mother about the lie they spread about the Spree being behind the attack. Abigail is definitely feeling some guilt about surviving her attack.

Samhain | Tally fills Raelle in on what happened when she confronted Alder, and also tells her friend that she doesn’t believe Alder. Abigail joins them and her and Tally fill Raelle in on what’s happening with their dinner that night; it will be eaten backwards (dessert first), be in complete silence, and there will be seats for the dead to join them.

Gregorio (Praneet Akilla) tells Abigail about the Camarilla attack where Adil and Khalida were. Abigail seems like she’s about to give up hope against beating the Camarilla.

Alder and Petra (Catherine Lough Haggquist) discuss the attack in India, the public was made aware that the Camarilla were behind the attack. Alder doesn’t seem pleased by this news.

Abigail walks out during training, she feels like it’s pointless. Raelle and Tally want to go home with her over fall break, but Abigail doesn’t think they would be safe there.

Samhain begins and they go through the ceremony of waking the dead. They are informed that they will be playing a “game” to keep a flame alive in the forest until midnight, the winner gets to speak with any dead witch of their choice. Raelle seems very interested, probably wanting to speak with her mother.

If Tally wins she wants to speak to one of the Martyred, she needs answers that Alder won’t provide. Raelle confirms she wants to talk to her mom. Abigail has several options to choose from, unfortunately. It begins, and they’re attacked with arrows that they must deflect, otherwise their fire will be extinguished.

During the ordeal Gregorio takes an arrow to the chest, but Raelle is able to fix him. They succeed in keeping the flame alive until midnight.

Chats with the Dead | The winners are all given candles and told that they have until the wax runs out to talk to their desired deceased witch. They each go to a dark, quiet place to have these intimate conversations.

Tally speaks with one of the Martyred and gets the answers she’s been waiting for. They did not choose to kill themselves, they were spelled to kill themselves.

Abigail speaks with Charvel (Bernadette Beck), who calls her a failure. She sys that Abigail failed herself. She’s letting herself be victimized by the Camarilla. Charvel reminds Abigail who she is, and tells her that she is vengeance.

Raelle never has anyone show up, but we know that’s because Willa Collar is alive and well.

The next day Adil returns to Fort Salem, he and Khalida survived the attack. Adil and Abigail share something new in common, they’re both being hunted by the Camarilla. Abigail wants to flip the tables on them and go after the person that killed Charvel.

Halloween Party | Scylla confirms with Bonnie that a Halloween party is happening, then tries to help Willa (Diana Pavlovská) convince Jonas(Albert Nicholas) not to run off and get himself killed. Jonas calls Scylla soft and weak, but Willa quickly disputes that.

Anacostia and Scylla head to the Halloween party together. The two of them seem to be getting along very well. They meet Bonnie (Emma Pedersen) and Shane (Juan Riedinger) on the way to the party, and Bonnie lets them know she’s not actually going because she is taking their daughter trick-or-treating. Scylla and Anacostia seem a little uneasy about this.

They arrive at an extravagant party, and Shane explains to them that the Camarilla will take care of them. He then tells them that Bonnie is too weak for this type of stuff, but he thinks they’re just right for it. They all place on white face masks and enter. Anacostia and Scylla don’t know anyone there, and Shane says he donated a gift to the movement to get them there.

They soon find out what that gift was, a young girl named Tiffany (Ava Marchfelder). She’s going to be stoned to death by everyone in the room. Anacostia sneaks off to kill the power so Scylla can save the girl. Anacostia gets into a bit of hot water when she crosses paths with Jack again, but she quickly deals with him.

Scylla needs to quickly distract everyone, so she reveals the truth about who she is and offers herself in Tiffany’s place. The Camarilla agree to take her, but that’s when the power cuts out. Anacostia turned it off. Without power she and Scylla can use their powers. Scylla makes it to the exarch and lights his face on fire and inhales the smoke. Once the place is cleared out they lead Tiffany to safety.

Presumably the next day, Scylla disguises herself as Bonnie and kills Shane with Brianna’s favorite pencil. But as she’s leaving Bonnie gets home. She tells Bonnie to find something to live for so that hate doesn’t destroy her. As she’s walking away, Scylla hears Bonnie’s scream.
