“Van Helsing” Series Finale Recap: The Vessel

SYFY’s Van Helsing has come to an end with its final episode of the series Friday night. The series gave us five fantastic seasons filled with action, adventure, love, fear, and of course, a whole lot of blood. ‘Novissima Solis’, written by Jonathan Lloyd Walker and directed by Michael Nankin, gave us a very satisfying finale with the Dark One’s defeat and a mostly happy ending for those involved in saving the world.

Still There | Bathory (Jesse Stanley) is dead, but the pentagram mark from the Dark One (Tricia Helfer) on her arm still works, so Vanessa (Kelly Overton) cuts it off and puts it on her own arm. She can now communicate with the Dark One, but more specifically Olivia (Tricia Helfer).

Olivia is still alive deep inside her subconscious, trapped by the Dark One. Vanessa tells her to break out when she calls to her. The Dark One notices what is going on and ends the chat, then she uses the pentagram mark to keep tabs on Vanessa and her crew.

The group returns to the Resistance and Vanessa shares that she can now read the scrolls now that she’s been inside Bathory’s mind. Which is a good thing, because they have no other way of weakening the Dark One enough to bite her.

Fighting Back | The Resistance break into two groups, the first is Sgt. Weathers (Luvia Peterson), who is now secret service, the newly returned human President Park (Stephen Lobo), and his son Aaron (Jeff C.), along with the Vice President Eli Newton (Peter Bryant).

The second group, who is going inside the White House to get to the Dark One, is made up on Vanessa, Jack (Nicole Muñoz), Violet (Keeya King), Ivory (Jennifer Cheon Garcia), and Axel (Jonathan Scarfe), along with a few others to help protect them. But the Dark One can sense them coming and sends out dark energy that turns everyone who isn’t a Van Helsing or has been bit by one into vampires.

President Park and Aaron have to get away from the VP before he bites them. Sgt. Weathers has also been turned, but her sense of honor and duty was too strong and she was able to resist her vampire urges and get President Park and Aaron to safety, but she sacrifices herself while doing so.

The second group is able to defeat all the new vampires and make it to the Oval Office. Vanessa, Jack, and Violet all go inside to face their destiny. Vanessa goes in reciting the scrolls, but Dracula immediately uses her powers to render Vanessa speechless.

She knocks Violet and Jack back, and reminds Vanessa of an old promise she once made to kill her children for the Dark One. Now the Dark One tries to force Vanessa’s hand and make her do it, but Vanessa is able to fight back and regain control of herself. She recites the rest of the scroll and the Dark One is now susceptible to a Van Helsing bite.

Knowing the end of her reign is near, the Dark One breaks the amulet they were planning on storing her dark energy in. Vanessa makes the only choice there is to make, and volunteers to store the dark energy inside her, she’s done it before [that’s how the whole show started] so she knows she can do it again. Jack bites the Dark One, and Vanessa traps the energy inside her body. Vanessa is able to sat a quick goodbye to her daughters before falling unconscious.

Aftermath | Things have returned to normal, at least inside the walls of D.C.. The vampires Dracula turned while fighting her last battle all return to human, President Park resumes his role as President, and Olivia Von Dracula has control of her body again and resumes life hundreds of years after she was taken over by the Dark One. Violet stays with her to help her adjust to living in this new world.

Ivory has been struggling with the knowledge that there are probably still members of the Sisterhood out there, and she decides to set off to find and help them. She shares a tearful goodbye with Jack and promises to come back to her, and Jack promises to still be there waiting for her. On her way out, Ivory passes a much older and badass Callie (Macie Juiles), who I am very happy to see has survived!

Axel is awarded a medal from the President, and then goes right back to what he was doing the very first time we ever saw him; guarding Vanessa’s comatose body. He’ll always be there for his Sleeping Beauty.

Vanessa is living the life she wished she had inside her head. She’s in her old apartment with Dylan (Hannah Chermay) and Susan (Hilary Jardine), and she’s probably the happiest she’s ever been.
