With Supergirl‘s titular heroine having been stuck in the Phantom Zone for the ENTIRE SEASON, is “Fear Knot” the one that finally gets the final season on track? Follow up question: Has anyone here seen “Vantage Point?” Because if so, this episode may seem familiar…
Alex, J’onn and their crew launch a mission into the Phantom Zone to save Supergirl, but are forced to confront their greatest fears en route.
Operation: Into the Phantom Zone | Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) escapes from the exploded tower in the Phantom Zone- and somehow, her father (Jason Behr) escaped with her completely unharmed even though that wasn’t shown to us! But that’s far from the biggest problem: Supergirl gets infected by a Phantom, meaning she’s pretty much screwed.
In the tower, J’onn (David Harewood) reveals that the whole tower is actually a spaceship that can travel to the Phantom Zone, which is pretty cool, and he, Alex (Chyler Leigh), Kelly (Azie Tesfai), Brainy (Jesse Rath), Dreamer (Nicole Maines) and Lena (Katie McGrath) all blast off into the Phantom Zone to track down Supergirl.
But almost immediately, the captured Phantom that they’ve been using to track her breaks free and infects Alex. Alex makes the rock stupid decision to lock up J’onn when he tries to make her sit it out, which draws the incoming Phantoms to their ship. Alex’s brilliant solution? Throw herself out the airlock to draw the Phantoms away! Death wish, much?
Rewind | The episode then rewinds a few minutes prior to a different perspective, this time, Lena and Nia have a bonding moment as they arrive in the Phantom Zone. Lena gets an alert about a coolant leak, but when she investigates, a water creature emerges and attacks her, having seemingly killed all save for Nia. Lena quickly realizes that the Phantoms are making her see her worst fear of watching her friends drown based on watching her birth mother drown when she was a child.
Another rewind and now Brainy and Kelly have a bonding moment before Kelly and Alex see an alert from down below and Kelly goes down to find Nia, Lena and Alex all controlled by the Phantom and closing in for the kill. Yet another rewind, this time from Nia’s perspective as she dreams of a cracked thimble with the tower’s picture on it. She and Brainy go to investigate and the hull gets breached and Brainy is about to be sucked out. Sensing a theme?
Snap Out of It! | For our final rewind, this time, J’onn and Brainy see Alex, Lena, Kelly and Nia all affected by fear visions from the Phantom. J’onn fights the Phantom and locks him up again, freeing everyone from their fears, but the ship is still being attacked by Phantoms. As Supergirl is feeling hopeless, as all heroes do, her father gives her a pep talk and that cures her infection, I guess? They get rescued in the nick of time by the tower ship and Kara reunites with Alex, but Mxly (Peta Sergeant) hitches a ride.
