“The Magicians” Season 3 Premiere Recap: The Cock’s Quest

Syfy’s The Magicians is back with its third season!!! The premiere was filled with all of our favorite faces, and a few new ones. Magic is still gone for humans on both Earth and in Fillory, but magical creatures still have their magic intact. ‘The Tales of the Seven Keys’ was written by Sera Gamble and directed by Chris Fisher.

Going After Gods | On Earth, things are looking bleak. Brakebills is on the brink of closing if they can’t get to the bottom of this no-magic thing, and Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) has run off in fear of the lamprey. Quentin (Jason Ralph) and Julia (Stella Maeve) take it upon themselves to try to get magic restored by going in search of some Gods to plead with for magics return. In their search they come across Josh (Trevor Einhorn) who just happens to know a minor god that might help, Bacchus (Ryan McDonald).

Bacchus is the Roman God of wine and knows how to throw one hell of a party. He gets Julia and Quentin pretty messed up at his party, but eventually they sober up enough to ask the God for his help. Bacchus has been so wrapped up in his parties that he didn’t even know the humans had lost magic. Bacchus doesn’t want to help, and when Q asks the God where his parents are Bacchus says he hasn’t spoken to the in centuries.

But when Eliot (Hale Appleman) sends them a message for help, Q and Julia jump to action to help their friends. They find the the book, The Tales of the Seven Keys, and Julia can feel the energy coming off of it. But inside the pages are blank. They know this is their quest to help restore magic and they are accepting it.

Elsewhere | Penny (Arjun Gupta) is doing his traveler thing working for the library to slow down his super cancer. As long as he is in the library the disease stops, but every minute he spends on Earth the disease quickly progresses. Still, Penny risks a few extra minutes of Earth time to see Kady (Jade Tailor). She’s happy to see him, but knows the cost and tells him to leave after only a few moments together.

At some old diner, Alice makes a deal with a vampire, a bit of her blood for some info. She’s terrified of what the lamprey will do to her for what Niffin Alice did to it, whatever that was. The vampire tells her what she needs to have on her at all times to act as an early warning system, but Alice doesn’t seem pleased with what it is.

The Great Cock of the Darkling Woods | In Fillory, things are much worse than for their buddies on Earth. Eliot and Margo (Summer Bishil) may be the High King and Queen of Fillory, but the fairies are secretly in charge there. Only Eliot and Margo can see them, but the Fairy Queen (Candis Cayne) controls their every move and continues to make Margo do ridiculous tasks such as dig up earth worms. Eliot decides he must do something to help his kingdom, so he goes in search of The White Lady, but instead finds one of her siblings, The Great Cock of the Darkling Woods. Instead of granting Eliot his wish of poofing the fairies away, the Cock gives Eliot a quest to restore magic. He must get a book from a public library in New Jersey to begin the quest. Que Eliot sending a messenger rabbit to Q, who finds the book with Julia’s help, and they send back several messenger bunnies with info. Maybe there’s hope for magic after all?

Who would have thought a giant rooster would be the ones to send the gang on their magic-saving quest! Will this book about keys pan out and be true? Can they actually save magic? Keep watching to find out!

The Magicians airs Wednesdays at 9pm on Syfy.
