“The 100” Recap: Planet Beta

CW’s The 100 is back for its final season and things show no sign of slowing down in this second episode. We follow Echo, Gabriel and Hope through the anomaly in search of Bellamy, but instead they’re hit with what happened to Octavia and Diyoza. ‘The Garden’ was written by Jeff Vlaming and directed by Dean White, and here’s what went down!

Octavia’s Story | The episode is split into two timelines, one when Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) and Diyoza (Ivana Milicevic) went through the anomaly, and one when Echo (Tasya Teles), Gabriel (Chuku Modu) and Hope (Shelby Flannery) go through. The first shows us what happened when Octavia arrived, how she arrived at the bottom of a lake and found Dioyza in labor in a small cottage nearby. Diyoza went through the anomaly just moments before Octavia, but those moments landed her there 3 months before O. Now that they’re together, Diyoza doesn’t have to go through childbirth and raising a child alone.

They start a life together, the three of them, in that cottage. Diyoza is very happy with their life there, but all O wants is to go back through the anomaly and back to her brother. She tries everything she can to swim back down to the bottom of the lake, but she can never make it. One day while gardening with a young Hope, O digs up a body in a helmet and suit. O knows she can use this to help get her to the anomaly safely, but when she tries to leave Diyoza sabotages the helmet, rendering it useless. Ocatvia is understandably upset, and we find out the real reason she wants to get back to Bellamy so badly. Now after raising Hope, she understands what he went through and why he banished her, and she just wants to tell him that. She ends up writing her brother a letter expressing everything she felt, but it into a bottle, and sent it through the anomaly hoping it would get to Bellamy. But it does something far worse, it alerts others of their presence, and soon those others come looking for them.

The men show up in the same suits as the man buried in the garden had, and they want O and Diyoza. Octavia quickly uses her hiding talents and hides Hope in the cottage while she faces the men with Diyoza. They’re both handcuffed and taken away, leaving Hope all alone.

Searching | Echo, Gabriel, and Hope all arrive at the bottom of the lake and swim to shore. Hope has her memories back, and knows exactly where to go. She leads the others to the cottage, but they quickly realize they’re not alone when a crazed man jumps out and tries to attack. After he’s gone, Hope explains that he’s a prisoner, that this is a prison planet where people are sent for 5 years to do time then are taken back to their home. Hope also reveals the news that not even Octavia had figured out. The anomaly, or bridge as Hope calls it, won’t send them back to Sanctum. If they can manage to get through it it would send them to a place called Bardo. Hope also tells them that the people who come back to get them are called the Disciples, and they are led by someone named Anders.

The three go off into the woods in search of the prisoner in hopes of being with him when the Disciples arrive so they can go with them. When they find the prisoner, its in a strange camp filled with dead bodies propped up like dummies. I guess the prisoner was getting lonely all by himself. But something on one of the bodies catches Gabriel’s eye. He knows this military man, he was on an Eligius mission, so Gabriel knows he must have a mind drive. he does, and Gabriel removes it so they can see the mans memories. Gabriel realizes this is Planet Alpha.

In the memories we see Becca (Erica Cerra), who Gabriel admittedly had a crush on, and then we see the real important stuff. Colin Benson had figured out the code to activate the anomaly, Gabriel just needs something to write with so he can copy it down. But before he can do that the prisoner returns and breaks the device they were using to view the mind drive, shattering their hopes along with it.
