“The 100” Recap: Of Course it Was Cannibalism

At the end of the previous episode of The 100, Clarke had found Abby on the brink of death. In this week’s episode we see Clarke save Abby, and through the doctor’s memories we see what happened in the bunker during what they call the dark year. ‘The Dark Year’ was written by Heidi Cole McAdams and directed by Alex Kalymnios.

Switching Sides | After saving her mothers life, Clarke (Eliza Taylor) is caught by McCreary (William Miller) and decides to switch sides. She tells him about the loop on their security tape and that Octavia and her people are on their way for war. McCreary tells her she’s got 24 hours to get her mother functioning again, there are lots of sick men who need her treatment. If not, he’s killing Madi (Lola Flanery).

Abby (Paige Turco) wakes up, and Clarke explains what’s going on. Her mother has to go through withdrawl, and it’s not going to be pretty. She makes Clarke tie her up, and hints that this is not the first time this has happened to her.

Abby goes through some intense withdrawls and says awful things to Clarke, but badass Madi steps up and defends her Mama Bear. Suddenly, Abby’s heart stops. With a needle full of adrenaline to the heart, Clarke brings her mom back.

Later, Abby and Clarke share a mom moment, then Abby begins to explain why she was taking the pills for so long. And Madi overhears the whole thing. The young girl tries to kill McCreary, but Clarke catches and stops her. She confronts Clarke about all the things she’s never told her, all the memories she now has from the flame show her how events occurred from Lexa’s viewpoint. Madi wants to go back to Octavia’s group, she says Clarke was a hero but now she is ashamed of her.

Spies | Raven (Lindsey Morgan), Murphy (Richard Harmon), and the rest of their crew is hiding out in a cave with Kane (Henry Ian Cusick), Diyoza (Ivana Milicevic), and the rest of their people. Raven and Emori get some faulty equipment running, but it doesn’t matter, Echo (Tasya Teles) has noticed that McCreary’s men are no longer looking for them. This is because they know Wonkru is coming, and Diyoza realizes McCreary must have her strategy notes and plans on using them. Echo radios Bellamy (Bob Morley) and alerts him that McCreary knows he’s coming. Bellamy tells his sister, and lets her know she’s basically killed all her people by forcing their hands.

Echo, Raven, Murphy, and Emori scout ahead and finds a group of McCreary’s men that are carrying lots of weapons and ammo. They try to rob the men, but it turns sour, but lucky for them Shaw (Jordan Bolger) followed them and saves all their asses.

The group reports back to Diyoza, wanting if there’s a safe way for Wonkru to get in the valley, and she realizes there is.

Bellamy takes the news to his sister, but once again warns her about going to war on what is quite possibly the only survivable land left. He tells her that when they get there the other side, i.e. Diyoza’s group, will surrender and lay down their weapons and they can all share the valley. Octavia accepts his terms, and he leaves her after insulting her.

Monty (Christopher Larkin) and Bellamy share a moment, and rations, by the fire.

In the Valley, Shaw and Raven finally kiss right before they go to war with McCreary’s men. Then Bellamy and Octavia go over the plan with their people, it looks like this could work, they might win. Or at least that’s what they think.

But Kane and Diyoza have betrayed them and gone to McCreary to tell him everything and that they can work together and defeat Octavia.

In the Bunker | We see what happened in the bunker during The Dark Year through Abby’s eyes, and what happens is INTENSE. They are running out of food, specifically a protein source. Abby has a solution, but it’s a grim one. They must resort to cannibalism, eating those who don’t survive the fighting pit. Kane is vehemently against this idea, but Octavia agrees, it’s their only option.

Only Octavis’a table and a few others are eating the human flesh, with Skairipa encouraging everyone to eat as well. Kane refuses to eat it. Abby knows Kane is the key to getting everyone else to eat, so that’s exactly what Octavia does.

At the next meal, Octavia begins shooting people who are not eating. You see the exact moment when Octavia crossed that line and went from Skairipa to Blodreina. Kane finally gives in and eats, knowing it will end Octavis’a killing spree. And it does. And so The Dark Year began.
